The CIO Agenda

Home

June 9th 2010
  • The Dorchester, London

In the last five years we have seen the role of IT in the business evolve almost beyond recognition. No longer a discrete entity, technology is present throughout the workforce but not necessarily integrated. Social media are driving a major shift in the way our society interacts and collaborates, and one of the key challenges for the CIO is to understand the implications and make them work for the business.

As many organisations adopt Cloud computing, we are perhaps moving closer to the idea of IT as a commodity. But this does not necessarily make the role of the CIO redundant. Rather, the focus will be on the information rather than the technology; understanding and managing the opportunities and risks created by these more open or “porous” technologies.

The CIO Agenda will offer a fresh perspective on these much-discussed trends. Leading CIOs, experts and influential thinkers will come together for an intense morning of debate on the impact of these technologies for the CIO and the future of IT leadership in the business.

DISCUSSION SESSION I: Cloud computing - IT as a commodity?

The benefits of cloud computing as a driver of efficiency and cost-control have been much discussed. However, if it really is the first step to IT as a utility, where does that leave the CIO? How can the business take greatest advantage of the cloud while minimising the security and other risks?

DISCUSSION SESSION II: How should the CIO manage social media?

You can't completely control the social media environment,  But it can be a valuable tool for business. What are the implications for the business of aggregating consumer - and possible employee - power in this way, and what is the CIO's role in the use and management of social media?

The discussion will begin with a presentation of findings from an Economist Intelligence Unit research paper "Working with new stakeholders" looking at how companies engage with online communities - managing the risks and making the most of the opportunities.

CLOSING ADDRESS: Challenges for tomorrow's technology leaders
