Technology Frontiers
March 22nd 2012 - March 23rd 2012
  • Inmarsat Conference Centre, London

Technology Frontiers is the new flagship event for The Economist Group.

Over 250 business leaders from across Europe descended on the Inmarsat Conference Centre next to London’s ‘silicon roundabout’ for two days of thought provoking sessions and networking. Led by The Economist’s, Digital Editor, Tom Standage, the event explored how advances in technology will transform our work, our lives, our world.

Vint Cerf and Bran Ferren discuss the difference between perceived intelligence and conscious experience.
Hugh Herr questions what it is to be human and whether the young and fit may choose to enhance their bodies by utilising new technology to make them even faster or stronger in the future. He demonstrates how his incredible prosthetic legs allow him to run and jump with astonishing agility.
Eric Rosenbaum proves a bit of playdough and a crocodile clip have more than one function when he used them to plug Cory Doctorow, Aleks Krotoski and Mark Stevenson into his computer to play them like a human keyboard.

Eric Whitacre showcases how he developed a virtual choir using YouTube to enable participants to post their singing and be conducted by him with breathtaking results.
Tom Standage gives a tour of the technologies that we think will have the biggest or most interesting impact on the world in the next ten years.

It is critical for business leaders to appreciate how technology will transform the world around us. It underpins key dynamics such as demographics, globalisation, sustainability and innovation.

Customer attitudes, employee behaviours and work-life balance are massively impacted by technology. As this process accelerates, what will this new world like?

The most visionary companies of the last decade are the ones that anticipated how technology would change society and impelled them to do something completely different.  Many of these technologies are already here, what impacts will they have for your business?

Delegates that joined us included academics, policy markers, journalists and senior business executives. Job titles represented included:
  • Chairmen/Board Members
  • CEOs/Presidents/Managing Directors
  • Heads of Technology, including CTOs, CIOs and Heads of IT
  • Heads of Operations and Risk
  • Heads of Innovation, R&D and Product Development
  • Heads of Strategy, Planning and Business Development
